MEET OUR PARTNER FAMILIES

Michelle and Jackson will become Habitat Homeowners at the end of 2009.  Michelle has lived in Durango for 17 years and has worked at the Durango Herald for 9 years.  She has always dreamed of owning her own home.
Jackson is seven and is in first grade at Needham Elementary.  He loves legos, dirt and bugs! He is very excited to have a room of his own to play in amd Michelle cannot wait to have a washer and dryer in her home. She has been going to a Laundromat for 10 years!  Michelle told us, “I want  my son to see that with hope, hard work and determination, you can accomplish anything.”

Kyla and Madisen: Kyla is a Durango native and her 11 year-old daughter Madisen was born in Fort Sill Oklahoma.  Kyla began attending Habitat events even before she was accepted into the program and she often expresses her heartfelt gratitude -  “I have never dared to dream about owning my own home, especially in this area where prices are sky high! But recently, after a lot of life changes including a divorce, finding a home for my daughter and me became a priority.  Rent here is outrageous and I was faced with the difficult choice of quiting school and moving away in order to find a more affordable place to live.  I found my way to Habitat for Humanity and now we are so excited about our future and building a place we can call our home!  From the staff and the volunteers involved with Habitat to my loving family and friends— I am in awe of how generous and truly kind the human heart can be, it’s amazing!”

Amy, Joseph and Justin have lived in Bayfield for 5 years.  Amy is currently employed at Grasshoppers in Bayfield as the Office Manager.  Her son Joseph, 17, will be a Junior at Bayfield High School this year.  He is very interested in electronics and enjoys cooking.  Justin, 13, will begin 8th grade in the fall.  He loves to play basketball and dreams of being in the NBA someday.  Amy found out she was accepted as a homeowner in May. She had this to say about becoming a Habitat homeowner… “This will be our first time as homeowners and we excited and looking forward to it.  We are thrilled to have this opportunity, everything has always felt like a struggle– I never dreamed this could be a possibility.  My boys and I can’t wait to begin building our home.  We will take so much pride in our home, knowing that we built it ourselves.”  Amy and her boys will move into their home in 2011.

Sherri and Marilyn: Sherri and her daughter Marilyn moved to Durango from Ft. Lauderdale.  They wanted to be able to experience a different environment and lifestyle.  They both love Colorado’s mountains, change of seasons and all the wonderful outdoor activities.  Marilyn, who is 14, is looking forward to helping out in the Habitat Home Supply Store to contribute to the “sweat equity” hours  her mom and her will do.  Sherri is looking forward to helping out on site where Habitat homes are being built this year and her home will be built next year.  Sherri said, “We feel very fortunate having been selected and are very grateful to everyone associated with Habitat for Humanity for making this possible.
